Goldendoodle Line Brushing: How to Prevent Mats Before the Groomer Shaves Them Down
Doodle coats often look fine on the surface while mats are forming underneath. Line brushing is a slower, section-by-section approach that helps you reach the coat near the skin before matting gets too tight.
Why surface brushing fails
A slicker brush can glide over the top coat while leaving compacted hair underneath. That hidden layer is what turns into painful mats and surprise shave-downs at the groomer.
The basic line-brushing rhythm
Work in small sections. Lift a layer of coat, brush the hair beneath it, then move to the next narrow line. Do not yank through tight mats; stop when brushing seems painful or the skin is pulling.

High-risk mat zones
Pay extra attention behind ears, under the collar, armpits, belly, tail base, and friction points from harnesses. These areas often mat before the back or sides look messy.

If mats are tight to the skin, cover a large area, smell bad, or make your dog flinch, do not try to cut them out at home. A professional groomer or vet is safer than scissors near skin.
